Width vs toe box: the two things a shoe size doesn't tell you
"Wide" often means the same last made looser. A wide toe box is a different shape entirely.

Width
Width letters (D, 2E, 4E) describe the girth around the ball of the foot. A true wide last is built on different dimensions. A "wide" that is just extra allowance on the standard last will still pinch at the toes.
Toe box
Toe box describes the shape at the front: whether the shoe tapers to a point or lets the toes sit in their natural splay. Some brands make a wide toe box in a standard width — helpful for bunions and splayed toes even if your ball width is normal.
How we measure
We measure ball width across a sample shoe with callipers and compare D and 2E/4E of the same model. If the difference is under 5 mm, the "wide" label is marketing.
